This week, the Government of Canada announced the easing of federal border measures for fully vaccinated travellers.
- Beginning August 9, Canada plans to begin allowing entry to American citizens and permanent residents who are currently residing in the US, and who have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entering Canada for recreational travel.
- Provided Canada's COVID-19 epidemiology remains favorable, the federal government intends to open Canada's borders for recreational travel on September 7.
If you would like more information on updated federal requirements and restrictions, please visit the Government of Canada's Travel and Tourism page.
In the Northwest Territories, we continue along the path outlined in GNWT's "Emerging Wisely 2021" document. In this document, the benchmarks for the resumption of leisure travel to the NWT are as follows:
- NWT: 75% of residents have full vaccination
- Canada: less than 1,000 Daily New Cases and 66-75% of the Canadian population has full vaccination.
At our last board meeting in June, NWT Tourism requested a meeting with the NWT's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Kami Kandola. Dr. Kandola's earliest available meeting time was August 11, and she will meet with the NWT Tourism Board of Directors on August 11, from 10:00-11:30. Please submit any questions you may have prior to August 4th at noon - either to any member of the Board of Directors, or directly to executive@spectacularnwt.com.
